Welcome to A Shark’s Garden.
Why am I Here?
I have a lot to say. Most of what I have to say is related to social justice, especially disability rights and Disability Justice, and especially especially, Neurodivergent and Mad Liberation.
Who Am I?
I am LC (Laura) Sharkey. I am not really a shark. I am a human. More specifically, I am a multiply disabled, Autistic, queer, AFAB enby, anti-zionist Jew, fat, un/under-employed, and now old as dirt human. I am also white, born into US citizenship, English is my first language, people seem to think I’m smart, I have never been convicted of a felony, I live in a house, and I am married. So in addition to a shitload of marginalization, I also have a shitload of privilege. I do my best to leverage it. I am fascinated by the subject of intersectionality in a way that makes most people’s eyes glaze over when they listen to me talk about it.
Needless to say, intersectionality will inform most of what I write, and I strongly believe that it is not possible to create sustainable, equitable change without working towards it from an intersectional angle.
More people in the US (and other places too, but I don’t know enough about any of them to write about them) really need to know more about social justice. That includes most social justice activists. I am a social justice activist, and I need to know more than I do about it. I also know a lot more about it than most other people, so maybe some of what I know will be helpful to someone.
Since social justice is such a serious (and very often sad and discouraging) topic, I’m also going to do my best to have a bit of fun here when the opportunity arises. I’m not a very playful person, but I’m trying to learn. My cats are really good at playing; they are a good influence on me, so maybe it will work out.
If you are interested in social justice, and you want to have conversations about it, please chime in!
If you want to learn more about social justice, and there’s something you want to know that I haven’t written about, please ask! If I don’t have an answer for you, I will go research it.
Why subscribe?
Why? That’s entirely up to you.
I may someday offer paid subscriptions, but for now, I’m just getting this thing started, and I haven’t figured out what sort of publication schedule is sustainable for me.
If you like what I write, and don’t want to have to remember to come back here on occasion, then, by all means, subscribe.
Or bookmark my site. That works too.
